A baby zebra is called a foal. When a foal is born, it is already able to stand and walk within a short period of time, usually within 15 minutes of birth. The young zebra will stay close to its mother for protection and nourishment. As the foal grows, it will begin to socialize with other members of the herd and learn important survival skills. Foals are typically weaned off their mother's milk at around 6 to 8 months of age. Zebras have a strong maternal bond and the mother will be very protective of her foal, often staying close by to ensure its safety.
